Today was the third day of the competition. I mumbled little magic phrases in Latin and watched as nothing happened. Something had altered inside me. I couldn’t do any wizard magic anymore. Also, my powers involved with heat and fire were more unstable than ever.

I stumbled through the halls toward the indoor arena. My mind was a mess. It didn’t help that I got zero sleep after I got back to my room last night.

Which meant they’d lift the boxes up to reveal what was underneath.

Other students came in. I hunched my shoulders and tried to turn up the collar of my jacket. I didn’t feel like myself. I felt like someone entirely different and it wasn’t something I could hide because it wasn’t just my magic that had changed. It was my appearance too.

I didn’t like how everyone else would know. Would see it on me--whatever it was. Instead of auburn, my hair was bright... really bright. The roots were a deep red and the color slowly shifted to yellow at the tips. It looked like fire. My deep amber eyes were now bright balls of orange. I didn’t look human at all. I looked like a freak.

I was trying not to lose it but my careful control was shaky at best today. Suddenly my normal actions felt like clown makeup I’d smeared on my face.
